⚡Transmission grids are now one of the binding constraints for renewable energy transition across the globe. As countries scale renewable energy, curtailment, congestion and long transmission lead times threaten momentum. Without parallel upgrades in planning, investment and operations, clean energy targets will remain on paper. At the inaugural Mumbai Climate Week (Feb 17–19, 2026), leaders across policy, finance and industry convened to accelerate climate action for India and the Global South. ISEG Foundation served as one of the thematic partners for the Energy Transition pillar. On 17 February, ISEG and Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) convened a session on “Enabling Grid Expansion and Integration – Key to Advancing RE Adoption in India and the Global South,” moderated by Shirish Sankhe and Disha Agarwal. 📌 Key takeaways from the session include: Agnes Dasewicz (CIO, The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet) highlighted the need for digital, AI-enabled grids that can manage decentralised, renewable-heavy systems, citing interconnected minigrids in Nigeria as a scalable model. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar (CMD, MahaTransco (MSETCL)) outlined Maharashtra’s ₹1.5 lakh crore transmission expansion, including a strategic shift from east-west to north-south transmission corridors aligned with emerging RE hubs and demand hotspots. Execution and institutional alignment, he stressed, matter more than capital availability. Pratik Agarwal (Chairman, Serentica Renewables) noted how competition in transmission has reduced timelines and emphasised the opportunity for cross-border grids to optimise RE utilisation. 🌍 The message was unequivocal: future-ready grids will determine whether India and the Global South can convert clean energy ambition into affordable, large-scale decarbonisation. Turning that ambition into execution requires coordinated planning and institutional alignment. As part of the Energy Transition blueprint for Maharashtra, ISEG worked closely with the Government of Maharashtra to address the grid challenge - supporting long-term transmission planning, corridor realignment, institutional coordination and implementation strategy to enable large-scale renewable integration.
