The crisis is having to do the work of three people (at least) for a third of the pay of your peers outside of academia (at best). There’s no reward at the end of this imbalance either. There’s no reward for being in academia at all anymore. It would be one thing if you put in these hours with little support and low pay knowing that at the end of it would be an impressive, well paid position. That is not the case. All that waits for you in academia is another low paid, more stressful role. There used to be a trade-off between work-life balance and income, especially when comparing academia to industry. Now there is no trade-off. The pay is insanely higher in industry, as is the work-life balance. There is no benefit to staying in academia after your PhD. It’s a death sentence to your career, perspective and mindset. #phd #phds #postdoc #postdocs #phdlife #phdchat #phdjobs #phdcareers #phdstudents #phdstudent #academicchatter
