Just over a year ago I met Dominik - an encounter I will never forget. He told me about how he fell through the cracks of our social safety net and ended up on the streets for ten years. We talked about the common misconception that “no-one in Germany has to live on the streets”... maybe in theory that is so. But in reality? It happens a lot quicker than anyone would think. He also told me about #GoBanyo, a shower bus for homeless people he would be launching in December. His Motto: Waschen ist Würde - to shower is dignity. After reading his book “Unter Palmen aus Stahl” I could no longer look away. And I realised that’s what we do so many times: instead of engaging with uncomfortable situations, we look away. Being part of GoBanyo has given me a new lens with which I view humans, homeless people and the urban - and it has changed the way I go through the streets. I’ve met the most amazing people and learned so much about life from our shower guests. Next time you see someone at the side of the road, consider looking them in the eyes, giving them that moment of dignified attention they deserve. And if you cannot or don’t want to give money, that’s fine, but at least acknowledge them with a smile. Just like you would with any other person. www.gobanyo.org #waschenistwürde
