When it comes to adult animation, the US has carved out a niche with shows that are equal parts raunchy, satirical, and surprisingly heartfelt. But let’s be honest: most of these shows still revolve around male leads and their misadventures. There are some absolute gems - Bob’s Burgers stands out for its quirky humor, endless puns, and a family dynamic that actually feels loving and supportive (a rare find in adult animation). Big Mouth, on the other hand, dives headfirst into the chaos of puberty with a cast that’s as diverse as their hormone monsters are unfiltered. Both shows prove that animation for adults can be smart, subversive, and genuinely funny. But here’s the thing: we need more female-centric adult animation. Sure, Bob’s Burgers gives us strong female characters like Linda, Tina, and Louise (even if two are voiced by men), and Big Mouth has made strides with characters like Jessi and Missy. Still, the landscape is mostly a boys’ club. Where’s the animated Broad City or Fleabag? Female-led comedies are thriving in live-action...animation should catch up! Audiences are ready for complex, hilarious, and flawed women at the center of animated stories, and the success of shows like Daria and Legend of Korra proves the appetite is there. Let's give the world more Tina Belchers and Jessis leading the charge - awkward, ambitious, and unapologetically themselves.
