The Ireland House building in Tokyo has been shortlisted for a Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Award. Ireland House Tokyo is one of 44 projects that have been shortlisted for the Awards in 2026 - the winners will be announced following consideration by an RIAI Jury on the 18th June. Ireland House Tokyo, completed in 2025, is home to the Embassy of Ireland to Japan, as well as offices for the State Agencies - IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Bord Bia - The Irish Food Board The building design was procured by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade by way of an open international architectural competition in 2019. The winning design by Henry J Lyons Architects from Dublin, Ireland with the cooperation of Japanese architects, Integrated Design Associates and landscape designers, Studio On Site, represents the expanding relationship between these two ancient and distinguished cultures. The completed building houses the Embassy, State agency offices, a library, a large flexible event space designed to host a variety of events, formal representational rooms and the official accommodation of the Ambassador. The design includes a full fit out of built in joinery, furniture, soft furnishings and artworks that showcase both Irish and Japanese makers and artists. The building is approximately 3,370sqm in area and is sustainably designed to achieve a CASBEE ‘S’ rank, the highest mark available in the Japanese sustainability accreditation system. All shortlisted entries are also part of the RIAI’s Public Choice campaign, which allows the public to vote for their favourite Building from the shortlist up until the 15th June.
