WORD OF THE WEEK: MANSPLAINING Last week we explored manspreading. This week, let’s stay on the same linguistic track with a word that’s equally modern and socially charged: mansplaining. Mansplaining is a blend of man + explaining. It describes the act of explaining something to someone (usually a woman) in a condescending, overconfident, and often inaccurate way. The key issue isn't just what is being explained, but why, often rooted in an assumption that the listener knows less because of their gender. In Italian, the brilliant neologism "minchiarimento" (from "minchia", a slang for "penis", + "chiarimento", “clarification”) captures the smug and unsolicited nature of this type of explanation. Essentially, an unnecessary, patronizing "ìclarification no one asked for. The term was popularized after Rebecca Solnit’s 2008 essay "Men Explain Things to Me", which opened the door for a broader conversation on gendered communication styles in professional and personal settings. What about your language? Do you have a word for this?Let me know in the comments! #WordOfTheWeek #Mansplaining #Minchiarimento #LanguageAndCulture #LinguisticBias #InclusiveWorkplace #CommunicationMatters #LinkedInLearning #CulturalAwareness #SoftSkills #GenderBias #ModernLanguage #WordsMatter #SpeakUp #LinguisticInnovation
