Marygate, York is a deep retrofit and garden extension that demonstrates how large‑scale glazing can be sensitively integrated within a conservation‑area setting. Situated on one of York’s most historic streets, directly opposite the remains of St Mary’s Abbey, this neoclassical house underwent a comprehensive refurbishment alongside the addition of a pavilion‑style brick extension. Designed by Arkle Boyce Leeds and built by GEM Construction (York) Ltd, the project required a careful balance between openness, privacy and heritage context. IQ Glass was appointed to design, supply and install two mirrored slim framed sliding glass doors, positioned on either side of the main kitchen and dining space to form a transparent hinge between the original house, the new extension and the garden. Each opening measures approximately 4.8m wide x 3.0m tall, configured as a three‑panel, three‑track system with two sliding panels and one fixed pane. The doors are double glazed using 6mm toughened glass with a low‑e coating, set within slim aluminium frames finished in PPC RAL 9005. Flush thresholds with integrated drainage channels allow continuity between internal polished concrete floors and the external terrace, supporting both everyday use and a clean architectural finish.
