UK-based Zambian economist Baroness Dambisa Moyo has been appointed Chair of The Economic Club of New York (ECNY). Founded in 1907, ECNY has established itself as a premier platform for high level dialogue on global economic and policy issues. Over the past century, it has hosted more than a thousand prominent speakers, including heads of state, US presidents, Fortune 500 chief executives and leading global thinkers. In her acceptance remarks, Dr Moyo said she was honoured to serve in the role and looked forward to building on the Club’s long standing legacy while engaging the next generation of global leaders. “I am honored to serve as Chair of The Economic Club of New York. I look forward to building upon the Club’s revered legacy while engaging the next generation of leaders shaping our global future,” she said. The economist, widely known for her sharp critiques of global development systems, brings extensive international experience to the position. Born in Lusaka, she studied Chemistry at the University of Zambia before obtaining a Bachelor of Science and MBA in Finance from American University in Washington, D.C. She later earned a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University and a Doctorate in Economics from Oxford University. Her career began at the World Bank, followed by a role as a research economist at Goldman Sachs. She gained global attention with her 2009 bestseller Dead Aid, which sparked widespread debate on foreign aid and development policy. Over the years, Dr Moyo has served on the boards of several major multinational companies, including Chevron, 3M, Barclays, Condé Nast, SABMiller and Seagate Technology.
