There are nearly 118 million people forcibly displaced in the world today, according to new figures released by UNHCR, a slight decline from last year. Fewer people displaced should be good news but the numbers tell a more complicated story. First, these are still historic highs. The number has doubled in the past decade. One in every 70 people on earth is forcibly displaced. Second, the numbers tell a story of forced returns as well as forced displacement. Millions of people returned to countries wracked by conflict and crisis as the protections they rely on — asylum, resettlement, and aid — were stripped away. Third, in some countries, the numbers are surging. In Lebanon, for instance, over one million people were forced to flee their homes in just two weeks. More in our response: https://lnkd.in/ejDpQjMZ
