In 2010, the world created about 2 zettabytes of data. Today, we generate over 120 zettabytes every year. One person now creates more data in a day than an entire company did 20 years ago. Streaming, cloud services, AI tools and billions of connected devices are driving this surge. Increasing amount of data is changing how we build and use technology. Networks must be faster, storage must be smarter and energy use is becoming a real challenge. Data centers already consume around 1-2% of global electricity, and the consumption will keep increasing in coming years. The question is no longer just how to store data, but how to manage it efficiently and sustainably. Companies like Snowflake (cloud data platforms for real-time analytics), Cloudflare (edge computing and faster content delivery) and Wasabi Technologies (low-cost cloud storage) are enabling businesses to handle massive data flows, while firms like Graphcore and SambaNova Systems are building AI chips designed to process large datasets more efficiently.
