How do you bring high-speed internet to communities hit hardest by telecom costs? You skip the massive, power-hungry cloud data centers entirely and process data right on the street corner. A new smart city network in Bellflower, California is doing exactly that. By deploying edge computing infrastructure powered by Intel Xeon processors, the public-private partnership delivers free or low-cost broadband to local residents and small businesses. Because Intel Xeon system-on-chip processors operate directly within compact, local solar towers, the system is highly versatile and runs at a fraction of the power, space, and cost of traditional setups. Even better, the same infrastructure serves as a digital foundation for future civic upgrades like smart traffic sensors and air quality monitoring. With pilot results already paving the way to scale this low-cost blueprint to 50 additional U.S. cities, it's a prime example of how edge architecture can solve real-world infrastructure challenges.
