China is no longer just a major source of research output. It is increasingly investing across the scholarly communication ecosystem in ways that are shaping how research is funded, evaluated, published, and disseminated. In this two-part analysis published in The Scholarly Kitchen, our VP of Growth, Strategy & Brand, Ashutosh Ghildiyal, together with Ning Zhang, Gareth Dyke and Yanli Wang, examine one of the most important developments in scholarly publishing today. The series argues that the conversation is no longer simply about the growth of Chinese journals. China is making significant investments across funding programs, journals, publishing platforms, evaluation frameworks, editorial networks, research integrity capabilities, and policy initiatives. These efforts are helping strengthen the country's research and publishing ecosystem while increasing its presence and influence in global scholarly communication. For publishers, societies, and industry service providers, several important questions emerge: 👉 How will a more geographically diverse and multipolar research landscape shape publishing strategies? 👉 What factors beyond traditional metrics such as Impact Factor will drive author, reader, and institutional preferences? 👉 How can research integrity, peer review quality, editorial expertise, and publishing infrastructure create long-term value? 👉 Where are the opportunities for collaboration, partnership, and innovation across different research communities and regions? Whether you are a society publisher, commercial publisher, university press, or publishing services provider, understanding these shifts is becoming increasingly important for long-term strategic planning. We encourage industry leaders to read both parts of this analysis and consider what a more multipolar and multi-centred scholarly publishing landscape could mean for our industry.
