Fellow researchers from National University of Singapore (NUS) joined the Pearse Keane medical AI lab this past week to further the Global RETFound collaboration and explore the potential for new projects. Since the Global RETFound initiative was formed last year, it has grown rapidly from the founding membership of Yih Chung Tham 覃宇宗 of NUS, Carol Cheung of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Pearse's lab at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and INSIGHT Eye Hub. Over 200 research partners are on now board from 70+ countries, covering every continent except Antarctica. Their mission is to build the world's first medical AI foundation model with globally representative data, trained on more than 100 million eye images from diverse populations for ocular and #oculomics detection tasks. Early performance tests of the model are promising, with open-source release expected later this year. The work expands on RETFound, the world's first AI foundation model in ophthalmology and oculomics, which was published in 2023 by Pearse's lab and made open source for non-commercial research.
