June is #cataract awareness month. Predicted to rise by 16.7% over the next decade, cataract surgery is already the most common operation in the NHS, with more than 500,000 patients treated annually in England, according to NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Through the INSIGHT Eye Hub at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, cataract data is routinely collected from patient appointments, including some 25,000 annual surgeries. The data is anonymised and curated into information-rich datasets, and made securely accessible to researchers working for patient benefit. This bio-resource represents the diversity of the population at Moorfields. INSIGHT data and advanced infrastructure supports the research work of the medical AI lab of Pearse Keane across UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields, in addition to external projects in the wider research ecosystem.
