𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭. In cybersecurity, the term refers to a strategy where encrypted data is already being collected today, with the expectation that it can be decrypted in the future once quantum computers become powerful enough. That raises urgent questions for critical infrastructure, financial systems and government communications. This is exactly the field in which Q*Bird operates, developing secure quantum communication networks. So we asked Remon Berrevoets, CTIO and Co-Founder of Q*Bird, who will join the InnovationQuarter pavilion at ZIE 2026, where their focus lies today. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰? Moving quantum security from research environments into operational, scalable infrastructure. While awareness of quantum threats is increasing, particularly around harvest-now, decrypt-later risks, most solutions remain pilots. Q*Bird focuses on telecom-grade multi-node MDI-QKD networks that operate over existing fibre infrastructure, bridging the gap between lab demonstrations and real-world deployment. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐙𝐈𝐄? Because building quantum-secure infrastructure requires collaboration across the full value chain. ZIE connects the South Holland high-tech ecosystem, from photonics and semiconductors to defense and manufacturing. Q*Bird is looking to connect with photonics partners, system integrators, defense stakeholders and industrial manufacturers to accelerate scalable quantum networks. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐃𝐈-𝐐𝐊𝐃? MDI-QKD is moving into operational multi-node deployments, eliminating detector vulnerabilities and strengthening long-term security. To scale further, the ecosystem needs integrated photonics, telecom-grade manufacturing standards, interoperability between vendors and industrial assembly capabilities. Europe already has strong photonics expertise, the next step is industrial coordination.
