Anyone for spanakopita? 🩵 We welcomed 260 people to celebrate Greek food and history at Marrickville Town Hall for Heritage Month. This event was a collaboration between Inner West Council Library and History and the Greek Festival of Sydney, supported by a Community Cohesion grant from ALIA. We were honoured to have George Skiperas, Consul General and Head of Mission at the Greek Consulate General, open the evening with a thoughtful talk on the cultural importance of Greek food. Local historian and educator Vasilis Vasilas presented the history of Greek food in Marrickville, and then was followed by a cooking demonstration by Dina Fakas who prepared spanakopita live on stage. 😍 Once seen as a simple meal from mainland Greece, spanakopita became a vital link to home for migrants, and over time, a symbol of belonging in Australia. It was a such memorable evening and a great way to honor our local Greek Culture.
