🚩 Zero-tolerance policies can be a false friend in Due Diligence Practice So-called false friends are approaches that sound compelling in theory but do not deliver the desired results in practice. At our SASI-Lunchbreak in May Berit Knaak, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate at the Geneva Center for Business and Human Rights (GCBHR) challenged the assumption that zero-tolerance in child labour and forced labour policies were effective. While zero-tolerance policies send a strong message, their implementation can create unintended consequences: 👉If the response to a violation is immediate supplier termination, this may limit the opportunity to engage, address root causes, and improve conditions on the ground. 💭 What other “false friends” have you encountered in sustainability or human rights due diligence?
