Cybersecurity startup Snyk has tapped Karyn Smith (pictured), Twilio’s legal head, as its new chief legal officer. Karyn Smith succeeds Stephanie Dominy, who was appointed a new role as vice president of legal operations and special projects, overseeing legal strategy for strategic initiatives and continuing to expand Snyk’s legal operations function, as announced by CEO Peter McKay. Smith most recently served as general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary for Twilio, where she built Twilio’s legal team from one person in 2014 to more than 140 attorneys and legal professionals, supporting the company’s growth from less than USD100 million in ARR in 2014 to nearly USD3 billion in 2021, and from 275 employees to nearly 8,000 employees. Prior to Twilio, Smith was chief operating officer and general counsel for Peek kids; general counsel for Meltwater Group; vice president and deputy general counsel at Zynga. Earlier in her career, Smith was practiced law at Cooley Godward for a decade, where she represented emerging growth companies at all stages of growth, guiding dozens of companies through public offerings. Smith also served on several Executive board of directors for various entities. She is currently a board member of Halcyon and Icertis.
