🌟INFORMS QSR Member Spotlight🌟 Michael Biehler, an Assistant Professor in the UW-Madison Dept. of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE), has recently received a single PI, $600K grant from Office of Naval Research (ONR). This 3-year project will establish the fundamental science of coupling quantum electromagnetic sensing with field-responsive 4D materials to create passive, self-activating protection for electronic hardware. The central idea is to understand how materials can be designed to recognize incoming electromagnetic or optical signals and autonomously change their properties to protect sensitive electronics. The research will determine how these external stimuli are detected, transduced, and converted into localized material responses for coupled quantum-material interfaces. Through integrated theory, modeling, simulation, and benchtop experiments, the project will identify governing mechanisms for activation thresholds, cross-layer coupling, nonlinear actuation, and time-resolved shielding behavior in spatially programmable multimaterial architectures.
