In his book Camera Lucida, French philosopher Roland Barthes defines punctum as an intensely personal, accidental detail in a photograph that pierces or punches the viewer. Unlike the studium, the broad, culturally understood context of an image, the punctum is completely subjective and unpredictable, immediately arresting the viewer's emotions.
