We spent months building content that ranks on Google. Then we looked at the actual click data. Impressions: growing every week. Clicks: almost nothing. At first we thought something was wrong with the content. The rankings were there — position 8, position 12, position 15 across multiple B2B industrial topics. But the traffic wasn't coming. Then we understood what was happening. Google isn't sending people to websites the way it used to. AI Overviews answer the question directly. Featured snippets answer it without a click. 60% of searches now end inside Google. For a B2B manufacturer running paid ads alongside organic content, this changes the calculation completely. Organic SEO is no longer primarily a traffic strategy. It's a visibility and citation strategy. The question isn't "does my page rank?" The question is "does my brand get cited when AI answers the question?" Those are two very different things — and most B2B companies are only measuring the first one. What we track now: → Brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity responses → Whether our content is cited in AI Overviews → Bing indexing status (because Bing feeds ChatGPT) Semrush's AI Visibility tools make this measurable.
