On Desertification and Drought Day, we are reminded that drought is more than a climatic event. It is a complex challenge with far-reaching impacts on water resources, ecosystems, food security, energy production, and human well-being. Current forecasts indicate a high likelihood of a strong El Niño developing in 2026–2027, increasing the risk of droughts, floods, heatwaves, and water shortages in many regions. While there is still uncertainty about how these impacts will unfold, vulnerable communities are expected to face disproportionate consequences. In this new blog, IHE Delft's Micha Werner explores what a strong El Niño could mean for water management and drought resilience, and why early action and preparedness are essential in a changing climate. As climate extremes become more frequent and severe, strengthening resilience through science, collaboration, and informed decision-making has never been more important. Raising awareness is the first step toward action. 👉 Read the full blog: https://lnkd.in/eeQM7KVb Contributions: Micha Werner, Celia Ramos Sánchez, Sumiran Rastogi, Balbina Nyamakura, Annelieke Duker, Pieter van der Zaag #DroughtResilience #ElNiño #WaterSecurity #ClimateAdaptation #WaterManagement #ClimateAction #IHEDelft
