Northern Basin Toolkit Inquiry report released The Inspector-General of Water Compliance, the Hon. Troy Grant, has released his final report following the inquiry into the Northern Basin Toolkit, a package of measures aimed at maximising environmental outcomes in the northern Murray-Darling Basin. The inquiry found that the Northern Basin Toolkit has underdelivered on its original environmental outcomes. This matters because the inquiry found a 70 gigalitre reduction in the northern Basin's water recovery target was based on, in part, the commitment of the NSW, QLD and Commonwealth Government to deliver the $160 million Northern Basin Toolkit’s measures, including both policy reforms and infrastructure projects. Of note, key infrastructure projects fell drastically short of their original targets over the program’s seven years. The report drew on over 12,000 documents, 16 submissions, field visits across the northern Basin, and interviews with senior officials from five government agencies.
