I’m glad to share a new op-ed I co-authored with Ana Kuo for Buenos Aires Herald on a question that matters for anyone trying to understand China 🇨🇳 today: what is really changing in its new generation? Our argument is that this is not simply a story of “Westernization.” What is emerging is something more complex: a generation shaped by memory, digital platforms, emotional consumption, aesthetics, speed, and new forms of belonging, while still remaining deeply rooted in a distinctly Chinese cultural logic. Between tradition, memory, and hyperculture (Byul Chung Hang theory), Chinese youth are not abandoning their identity: they are reshaping it. And understanding this process is important not only for those who study China, but also for those who want to understand where one of the world's most influential societies is headed.
