💡 Did you know? 🐣 The origins of the society of Engineers and Scientists of France (IESF) trace back to 1848, with the creation of the "Central Society of Civil Engineers" — an association founded by former students of the École centrale des arts et manufactures, now known as CentraleSupélec. ⛔ Contrary to popular belief, the term "civil" was used to distinguish these engineers from public sector engineers who were trained at the time by the École Polytechnique and its application schools. ✒️ The Society of Civil Engineers of France was aknowledged to be of public utility in 1860 by an imperial decree from Napoleon III. From its founding, it published a bulletin, "Memoirs and Proceedings of the Society of Civil Engineers", to trace and disseminate technical advances. 🗼 In 1889, the society’s president was none other than Gustave Eiffel, the visionary engineer behind the Eiffel Tower — a structure that would become one of the Ville de Paris and France’s most iconic symbols. 👩‍🦰 In 1922, Jeanne Guiot became the first woman admitted into its ranks, marking an important milestone for diversity within the profession. ✨ In 1978, the society merged with the Union of French Industrial Associations and Societies to become the "Society of Engineers and Scientists of France" (ISF). This led, in 1992, to the creation of the current association, Ingenieurs et Scientifiques de France. 🌱 Knowing this history helps us understand the evolution of a profession that continually adapts and innovates while keeping its core values.
