It's Hug Your Cat day! Today is a great reminder to celebrate the special bond we have with our cats, but “hugging” a cat isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. Showing affection the right way helps build trust and keeps them comfortable. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind: 1. Let your cat lead Always allow your cat to approach you first. A cat that initiates contact is far more likely to feel safe and relaxed. 2. Rethink the “hug” Many cats don’t enjoy being tightly held. Instead of wrapping your arms around them, try gentle petting along their cheeks, chin, or back. 3. Watch their body language A relaxed tail, slow blinking, and soft posture signal comfort. Flicking tails, flattened ears, or trying to move away are clear signs to give them space. 4. Support, don’t restrain If your cat enjoys being picked up, support their body properly - one hand under the chest, the other under the hind legs - keeping them secure without squeezing. 5. Keep it short and positive Affection should be brief and pleasant. Ending interactions before your cat becomes uncomfortable builds positive associations over time. National Hug Your Cat Day is less about the hug and more about understanding how your cat prefers to be loved. When we respect their boundaries, we strengthen the relationship and that’s something worth celebrating!
