The future of Intellectual Property is not just about protecting innovation—it is about shaping economies. At this year's WIPO–NGO Dialogue during the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO Assemblies in Geneva, a powerful message emerged: 📍Intellectual Property is increasingly recognised as a strategic enabler of innovation, economic growth and sustainable development. Several themes particularly resonated with the I3PM community. 🔹 IP is becoming a strategic business and policy tool. Around the world, governments are moving beyond viewing IP as a legal framework. Instead, it is increasingly being integrated into innovation, industrial and economic development strategies to stimulate investment, entrepreneurship and competitiveness. 🔹 The knowledge economy is accelerating. WIPO presented compelling evidence that investment in intangible assets—including intellectual property, software, brands and data—is growing significantly faster than investment in tangible assets. Competitive advantage is increasingly built on ideas rather than physical infrastructure. 🔹 Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the IP landscape. AI is creating new opportunities while raising important questions across patents, copyright, inventorship, enforcement and innovation policy. As these technologies evolve, international dialogue and collaboration will be more important than ever. One message captured the spirit of the discussions: 📍Human creators and innovators must remain at the centre of the intellectual property system. At I3PM, we believe this evolution reinforces our mission. Intellectual Property should not be managed in isolation. It should be integrated into business strategy, innovation management and value creation. As organisations navigate emerging technologies, geopolitical shifts and increasingly intangible economies, strategic IP leadership has never been more important. We thank WIPO for fostering an open dialogue with civil society and look forward to continuing to work with governments, industry, academia and NGOs to advance a more inclusive, balanced and future-ready global IP ecosystem.
