A great day in human history on April 12th, 1961 when the Soviet Union successfully was the first to put a man into space with a single orbit around the Earth. Yuri Gagarin was the man of the moment and the cosmonaut hero of the USSR. The sad backstory is the person who was the architect of the Soviet space program was only known to the world as the Chief Designer. Sergei Pavlovich Korolev was only known to those within the Soviet power circles and the space program. Despite being anonymous to the entire world, Korolev's program awakened the United States politicians to increase funding for NASA to the point it outpaced the USSR and resulted in the US landing humans on the Moon in 1969. Sergei Pavlovich Korolev died in 1966 without any recognition from the USSR. #history #sovietunion #americanhistory #space #themoon #cosmonaut #apollo https://lnkd.in/eXRmMs5
