At a time when democracy activists in Brussels are campaigning to replace Belgium's outdated old Senate with a randomly selected citizens’ assembly, I stumbled a fascinating echo of sortition from the 14th century. Back then, the city used the lot to escape successfully from elite in-fighting, corrupt mega-projects, over-taxation of ordinary folk, and a crushing city debt. A good omen, perhaps?
