Young people from the Alton Estate marked Book Week this year in a creative way through the Library Legends Hoarding Project. This community arts initiative has transformed the construction hoardings surrounding Block A, the first building slated for demolition, into a celebration of reading, stories, and local talent. The project features bespoke artwork designed by local young people, drawing inspiration from books, libraries, and the power of stories to connect communities. Installed across the hoardings, the artwork showcases the creativity and imagination of local participants while brightening the public realm during ongoing regeneration works. HTA’s communications and engagement team facilitated a series of creative workshops where young people produced portraits of their favourite literary characters. These sessions doubled as an engagement tool, allowing the team to gather vital community feedback on the new children’s library proposed for the regeneration area. The Library Legends project forms part of the wider Alton Estate Regeneration programme, which aims to create not only new homes and improved facilities, but also opportunities for residents to shape and contribute to the future of their estate.
