We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of long-time friend, beloved rock DJ, and champion of the Foodbank, Mike Arlo. Today we’re thinking of his family, co-workers, many listeners and friends, and remembering the powerful legacy he leaves behind. Arlo was front and center for the very first 106.9 Mayflower Marathon food drive in 1997, fostering community spirit year after year across the Peninsula. The longevity of the Mayflower Marathon is due in large part to his joyful demeanor that inspired people to come out and give their time and resources to help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The tradition will celebrate its 30th year this November. Arlo’s impact on the community is immeasurable. He provided the soundtrack to so many of our memories and helped fill holiday tables for thousands of families. Last year alone, the Mayflower Marathon raised enough food and funds to provide over one million meals across Hampton Roads. We will miss hearing his memorable voice, listening to his great stories, sharing a coffee and donut with him, and seeing his signature thumbs up. His kindness and magnetic spirit will be felt by so many of us for years to come.
