Ms. Hemby's story is a powerful reminder that access to healthy food can change lives. After experiencing a ministroke in 2024, Ms. Hemby was placed on long-term disability and suddenly found herself trying to support her family on half of her regular income. The financial strain made an already difficult situation even harder. Through our Community Pantry partnership with Sentara, Ms. Hemby found more than food. She received nutrition education focused on managing hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol, and gained access to fresh, nutritious foods that helped her take control of her health. The results were life-changing. "I not only lost weight and lowered my blood pressure naturally, I got my life back and out of depression," Ms. Hemby shared. "I am doing much better with my health, and I wanted the Foodbank to know your program is not only changing lives but also saving lives." Over the past 40 years, we've learned that addressing hunger is about more than providing meals. It's about creating opportunities for our neighbors to improve their health, build stability, and work toward their goals with dignity and support. From after-school and summer meals for children to workforce development programs, medically tailored food assistance, and health-focused pantry services, we're committed to meeting the evolving needs of our community. Stories like Ms. Hemby's are possible because of a community that believes everyone deserves access to healthy food and the opportunity to thrive. Thank you for helping us build a healthier future for our neighbors, one person and one family at a time. #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors #CommunityImpact #FoodIsMedicine
