This week, the our Community Food Pantry welcomed dozens of 7th graders from Booker T. Washington Middle School for their Career Day! Students got a behind-the-scenes look at how the pantry provides fresh produce, lean proteins, and shelf-stable foods to support our neighbors, while also learning how to make healthy food choices. They practiced reading nutrition labels and sorted donated items using our Healthy Eating Research Guidelines, which categorize foods as Choose Often, Choose Sometimes, and Choose Rarely based on saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. “A lot of families don’t understand what the Foodbank offers. Education around the Foodbank is important,” said Larry Orie, Family and Community Engagement Specialist. “This is just the beginning. The next step is building a pop-up pantry.” This week, the pantry is stocked with celery, greens, pineapples, papaya, cantaloupe, corn, squash, avocados, grapefruits, and more.
