Watch our new film to see how Fetch Energy, a start-up aiming to harness wave power, has been testing its device prototypes in our laboratories. Fetch Energy is developing its first wave energy generator product - designed for boat owners to deploy while moored or anchored, providing clean electricity for onboard electronics. With only one moving part, its core generator technology represents a significant advancement in wave power, offering greater reliability, affordability and scalability. Following initial sea trials, Fetch Energy secured Innovate UK funding to evaluate prototype performance in controlled conditions. The company selected HR Wallingford from UK Research and Innovation’s approved list of Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) to carry out this work. Two rounds of testing were completed at our site, enabling the Fetch team to validate the first prototype, refine the design, and confirm improved performance during the second phase. With strong results achieved in our facilities, Fetch Energy plans to begin customer pilot trials in summer 2026, ahead of a full product launch in November. Having proved the technology at micro scale, Fetch Energy plans rapid scale of their devices into commercial maritime and off-shore industry applications and, ultimately, into grid-scale wave power.
