This week the NATO Secretary General announced that all NATO members have finally reached the 2% of GDP target for military expenditures, reflecting an agreement originally established at the Wales 2014 Summit after pressure from American President, Barack Obama. Over the years his successors Joe Biden and Donald Trump kept up the pressure so the burden for collective defence would be more broadly shared throughout the Alliance. Canada and others have also agreed to reach 5% of GDP by 2035. With the dire state of world affairs, this is the right thing to do, despite entailing sacrifice from us all. Only by showing strength in our ability to defend freedom and democracy, can we deter others who would challenge the rules based international order that has served us so well over the past eighty years.
