This weekend, the Mathematical Association of NSW Inc board came together for our annual planning weekend and it was the kind of reset that reminds you why this work matters. We spent time stepping back from the day to day and looking honestly at the year ahead - what mathematics teachers across NSW need most, where we can have the biggest impact and how we can keep supporting great teaching in every context, from large metro schools to small regional communities. A big focus was shaping our new strategic plan. Not just a document, but a shared direction. We asked the hard questions: What should we protect? What needs to change? Where can we be bolder? Most importantly, how do we make sure our work stays grounded in classrooms, in students and in the realities teachers are navigating right now? Ending the year feeling energised, grateful and genuinely proud to be part of a team that cares deeply about both excellence and equity in mathematics education. There is something powerful about smart, committed people sitting around a table, wrestling with ideas, challenging each other respectfully and choosing a path forward together. Here’s to a big 2026 ahead and to building a plan that turns good intentions into meaningful action for teachers and students across NSW. Katherin Cartwright Doug V.
