I’ve recently found myself thinking a lot about cockroaches. We live at the edge of town surrounded by orchards and a large park so cockroaches are a common visitor, especially in the summer. Until recently, I was the person who would intentionally ride over them on my bike or kill them if I found one in the garage. Lately, I’ve caught myself hesitating. Cockroaches seem surprisingly clever, and the more time I spend thinking about ecology, the harder it is to dismiss any species as “just a pest.” Everything has a role even if that role occasionally conflicts with ours, right? And then I listened to this Radiolab episode this afternoon. It doesn’t ask us to love cockroaches but it invites us to examine where our reactions come from and what we might learn by looking a little closer. Whether you’re fascinated, skeptical, or still smashing them on site, it’s an interesting listen. https://lnkd.in/gnJBZNJS #Ecology #Biodiversity #Conservation #Nature
