Release on temporary licence (ROTL) can play an important role in supporting a child or young person’s development and helping them resettle successfully in the community. Currently only a small number of those in custody in England and Wales can access ROTL. That’s why we’re introducing a more consistent, child-first approach - with more children and young people assessed as suitable where risks can be safely managed, helping them prepare for life after release. Activities can include: 🏠 housing interviews 🎓 Duke of Edinburgh 💻 college and job interviews 🩺 registering with a GP 💊 visiting a pharmacy 💰 opening a bank account This builds on a year-long pilot in the Youth Custody Service, which showed that ROTL can be effective in supporting positive resettlement and improving outcomes for victims and communities.
