We’re proud to celebrate the start of commercial operations of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE), a major milestone for clean energy in North America. Owned by Transmission Developers (TDI) and powered by Hydro-Québec, this landmark transmission line has the ability to deliver 1,250 MW of clean hydropower from more than 60 generating stations in Canada directly into Astoria, New York. This is enough to supply approximately one million homes and meet nearly 20% of New York City’s electricity needs. The project is also expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by an estimated 3.9 million metric tons annually, while improving local air quality and supporting healthier communities. At the heart of CHPE is Hitachi Energy’s advanced HVDC Light® technology, enabling efficient transmission of large amounts of energy over 375 miles of underground and underwater cables. This approach minimizes environmental and community impact while reflecting the exceptional execution capabilities of all partners involved who worked with precision, coordination, and a shared commitment to deliver this complex, city-center infrastructure project successfully and ahead of schedule. CHPE represents more than an engineering achievement. It reflects a long-term partnership built on trust and a shared vision to advance cross-border collaboration, strengthen grid resilience, and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy future while delivering tangible environmental and public health benefits to the communities it serves.
