Professor Oladele Adebayo Ajose (September 20, 1907 – July 2, 1978) was the first tenured African professor in Nigeria. He was also the first Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, then University of Ife, and one of the earliest Africans to hold a professorial chair. A Lagos prince born into the Royal House of Oba Ologun Kutere in 1907, Professor Ajose contested the throne of the Oba of Lagos with Pharmacist and Sunday School teacher Adeyinka Oyekan in 1964. However, he lost to his rival who would become Oba Oyekan II when he was installed on March 11, 1965. #HistoryVille Photo Credit: University of Glasgow
