“India needs energy security.” But somehow, India doesn’t seem to need Petroleum Engineers. As a recent Petroleum Engineering graduate, this realization has been both shocking and disheartening. I graduated from a premier Institute of National Importance dedicated to Petroleum and Energy studies, trained by world-class faculty, with years spent studying drilling, reservoir engineering, production, enhanced oil recovery, and energy systems. Yet, when I started exploring opportunities, I found an uncomfortable truth: Most PSUs don’t even recruit Petroleum Engineers as freshers. Apart from ONGC and OIL, there are barely any opportunities specifically open for Petroleum graduates. Meanwhile, students from many other core engineering branches have access to multiple PSU pathways and broader recruitment options through GATE. What hurts even more is this: The Petroleum Engineering discipline itself plays a direct role in India’s energy future, but the ecosystem for fresh graduates in this field feels extremely limited. Many talented students spend years mastering a highly specialized domain, only to realize that the career pipeline is far narrower than expected. This post is not about blaming any organization. It is about starting a conversation. • Why are opportunities for Petroleum Engineers so limited despite the importance of the energy sector? • Why are specialized graduates often excluded from broader engineering recruitment? • And how can industry and policymakers create better pathways for young Petroleum Engineers? I know many students and graduates in this field silently share the same frustration.
