Breakthroughs beneath the waves. Off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast lies a world once thought lost forever; ancient cities, temples and harbor structures that were submerged centuries ago. In 2025, the long-term underwater archaeology project, led by Franck Goddio and supported by the Hilti Foundation, uncovered one of Egypt’s ancient pleasure barges in Alexandria’s harbor, a first of its kind discovery offering rare insight into ritual, luxury and everyday life in early Roman Egypt. By supporting this underwater archaeological research, the Hilti Foundation helps to facilitate discoveries like this, expanding our understanding of ancient civilizations and reminding us how much history still lies hidden beneath the surface.
