To expand their light rail systems, many #transit agencies use what Vice President, Rail and Transit Derrick Chan, PE, calls “mixed alignments.” A mixed alignment is one that runs for at least part of its length at one grade and part of its length at another—a line comprising underground and elevated segments, for example. While mixed alignments allow agencies to thread light rail over, under, and through busy city streets, they are also far more complex to deliver than comparable single-modality alignments.
