How do you monitor a power cable you cannot reach? You build a sensor into it. A single optical fiber, embedded in the high-voltage cable during manufacturing, could give operators continuous readings of temperature, vibration and strain along the full length of the cable. DTS finds hotspots before they become thermal overloads. DAS picks up trawler interaction or an anchor strike in real time. DTSS catches fatigue and seabed movement long before they turn into faults. For an asset that can stretch a hundred kilometers and sit on the seabed for decades, sensing turns the cable from something you cannot inspect into a live data source you can act on. Hexatronic has been designing optical fiber units for high-voltage power cables for more than twenty years, in close cooperation with power cable manufacturers. Our latest article by Product Developer Tobias Borg looks at what makes those fibers survive the environment, and why integrated sensing is becoming standard on offshore wind and HVDC projects.
