This NAIDOC Week, as we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly, we are proud to recognise the strength of Aboriginal community organisations leading change in their own terms. First Peoples' Health and Wellbeing (FPHW) was a finalist in the 2025 HESTA Australian Nursing & Midwifery Awards for their Birthing on Country program, a model that provides holistic maternal, child and family healthcare that embeds cultural integrity and safety during pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care for First Peoples. The program operates through Baluk Balert Barring, Victoria's first Aboriginal Early Parenting Centre, offering care until a child is six, with a multidisciplinary team of midwives and other health professionals delivering care. Families who attend are supported by staff who understand their culture, their community, and what safety really means for them. This is exactly what five decades of NAIDOC has been building towards, community led care with culture at the centre, and outcomes shaped by its community needs.
