The Herrenknecht EPB Shield Mayrit, 9.4m in diameter, has broken through at the Madrid Río Station, after excavating 1.1km of tunnel in just two months. Since its launch from Comillas Station in late March, the 98 meter-long, 1,500 tonnes TBM has advanced beneath some of Madrid´s busiest urban infrastructure, including the M-30 ring road and the Manzanares River. Mayrit maintained an average advance rate of 15 meters per day, with peak rates of up to 30 meters per day. Following a scheduled maintenance stop, the TBM will continue its journey towards Conde de Casal. Upon completion, the project will deliver 5.9 km of new tunnel, supporting the expansion of Madrid’s metro network and improving connectivity across the city.
