Research does not fail because it is irrelevant; it fails because we pretend maturity emerges for free. I have written a 3-page column titled "The Invisible Work" for Elsevier Journal of Systems and Software's "Dear Researchers" article collection. It reflects on technology readiness and the challenging work required to get raw software engineering research output into production. The article is available from Elsevier for download: https://lnkd.in/d77Az_zq Check out the other articles in the "Dear Researchers" collection: https://lnkd.in/dW5WjeAV Thanks to Olaf Zimmermann and Austin Henley for running this column, which supports refining our discussion on how to close the gap between research and practice. Thanks to Paris Avgeriou and David Shepherd for hosting it at Elsevier JSS. Would be great to get feedback on the topic: What's your view on getting research into practice? Do you have experiences or advice to share? How can we move forward in software engineering? Are the suggestions in the article useful? Comment on this post.
