1,300+ tonnes of asphalt with 100% hydrogen 🛣️ In a pilot trial at the Criggion asphalt plant, Heidelberg Materials UK produced asphalt using electrolytic hydrogen (generated as a by‑product from the chloro‑alkali industry) instead of liquid fossil fuels. First results: • 25 tonnes of CO₂ saved • scope 1 (direct) emissions reduced by 76% • product carbon footprint of the asphalt reduced by 23% • no impact on the quality or performance of the material This pilot demonstrates hydrogen fuel switching as a practical route to lower‑carbon construction materials. We will use the findings to guide further technical evaluation and future trials while assessing wider deployment. For the next stages, we are currently exploring funding options for potential full-scale conversions within our UK business.
