Launched in July 2017, the Healthier Ingredient Development Scheme (HIDS) was introduced by Health Promotion Board to improve the diet quality of Singaporeans — 60% of whom dine out at least four times a week — by incentivising food manufacturers to develop healthier staples such as wholegrain noodles, lower-saturated-fat oils, and low-sodium solutions. Working in tandem with the Healthier Dining Programme, HIDS was enhanced in 2021 to include R&D and Go-to-Market grant tracks. Since its launch, HIDS has driven significant industry impact for healthier ingredient sourcing by empowering F&B establishments to adopt healthier cooking seamlessly. The Healthier Choice Symbol Development Scheme (HDS) offers up to $200,000 per project to fund R&D efforts aimed at achieving Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) certification for products that do not yet hold this certification. Additionally, the Go-to-Market Scheme (GTMS) provides up to $300,000 per year to support the commercialisation and marketing of products that already hold Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) certification. Most recently, HPB held a successful two-day Meet-the-Supplier event bringing together schools, preschools, and food suppliers to advance healthier eating in educational institutions. Highlights included expert-led sessions by Singapore Polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education College West, networking opportunities with distributors to address procurement challenges, and customised culinary training to help institution staff create nutritious meals — reflecting a growing ecosystem of partners committed to making healthy eating practical and sustainable in schools.
