The American Revolutionary War directly led to the founding of Harvard Medical School. Only about 10% of physicians were educated at a medical school prior to the war – the remaining 90% learned through apprenticeships. The war became an intense and transformative learning experience, exposing physicians to unprecedented medical and surgical challenges. Among these physicians was John Warren, who would become the founder of Harvard Medical School. While overseeing the Continental Military Hospital in Boston, he became incredibly skilled in surgery and deepened his knowledge of anatomy as he treated wounded soldiers. Warren shared what he learned and delivered lectures on anatomy, eventually catching the attention of the president of Harvard who asked him to organize a plan of medical study, thus establishing Harvard Medical School.
